Sudanese Teachers Committee Appeal to Partners on the International Day for Humanitarian Action Supporting Education in Sudan
Khartoum: Alsudanianews
On the occasion of the International Day for Humanitarian Action, the Sudanese Teachers Committee calls upon all partners to support education in Sudan.
UNESCO has announced the launch of a major campaign to support education in Sudan, scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 2:00 PM. This initiative forms part of what UNESCO terms the “Transitional Education Plan in Sudan,” with an indicative budget of USD 400 million. The plan aims to reach 80% of the more than 17 million students who have been forced to leave school due to the ongoing war. This event will bring together dozens of local and international organizations, donors, and education advocates.
We consider these humanitarian efforts as a vital step towards social reconstruction and sustainable peacebuilding. In this spirit, we express our full support for the initiative and appeal to all partners and stakeholders in Sudan to join us in maximizing the benefits for our children across the country. The education sector has suffered disproportionately in this conflict, and it is clear that the collapse of this sector jeopardizes the future of Sudan.
Accordingly, we emphasize the following priorities:
1. The education plan must be comprehensive and equitable, inclusive of all regions of Sudan.
2. The economic conditions and welfare of teachers must be prioritized and addressed.
3. Curricula and educational materials must be adapted to reflect the realities of both the ongoing conflict and the post-conflict context.
4. Teachers should receive training to effectively respond to these evolving circumstances.
While commending this important initiative, we remind stakeholders of the detrimental impact that the fragmentation of education during the war has had on social cohesion. The division and exclusion of entire states from educational services, and the sidelining of the Ministry of Education’s national framework, have seriously undermined educational continuity and quality.
We therefore urge that this campaign ensure inclusivity and bring all education stakeholders into the planning and implementation processes. We caution against exclusionary practices based on unjustified grounds. It is in the best interest of all that education remains neutral and insulated from political conflict, serving instead as a unifying force. The focus must remain on technical standards, avoiding polarization, and upholding the core values and principles of humanitarian work.
The Sudanese Teachers Committee is committed to complementing these humanitarian efforts by developing a shared vision and framework based on common principles and values essential to the future of public education. We look forward to contributing to the upcoming meetings and ongoing discussions.
