The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs arrives in the liberated territories to assess the humanitarian situation of the displaced.

A high –level delegation led by Mr. Tom Fletcher, the United Nations Under –Secretary – General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, visited the liberated territories, under the control of the self-defense forces of the Sudan Liberation Army on Friday, 14 November 205, the visit aimed to conduct a comprehensive and objective assessment of the humanitarian conditions affecting the Internally Displaced persons (IDPs) at the field level.

Upon arrival, the delegation was received by Mr. Mujib Al-Rahman Mohamed Al- Zobier, head of the Civil Authority in the liberated territories, , alongside representatives of the IDPs and the host community.

At the outset of the meeting, Mawlana Mujib Al-Rahman extended a cordial welcome to the UN delegation, expressing profound appreciation for the sustained and resolute focus of the United Nations to resolve the issues facing the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Moreover, he provided a comprehensive, and up- to- date briefing on the humanitarian situation, highlighting the growing needs of the displaced population in the liberated territories. He further expressed hope for speedy end to the war and realization of a just, comprehensive and sustainable peace, while calling on the United Nations to establish a liaison office in the liberated territories to enhance coordination and support. 

Following the briefing, the head of the Civil Authority formally submitted a meticulous letter to the UN envoy outlining the urgent humanitarian needs of both the IDPs and the host community.

In response, Mr. Tom Fletcher expressed sincere gratitude to the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army for ensuring security, stability and provision of shelter centers for the displaced persons, he fully acknowledged all the requests presented to him by the head of the Civil Authority and promised to work on increasing and enhancing the humanitarian services for the affected populations.  

In related context, the UN Under-Secretary-General also tackled mechanisms to halt the ongoing war and work for advancing lasting peace in Sudan. He pledged to mobilize the full capacities of the International Community to deliver timely and indispensible support for the IDPs and to establish practical measures for their protection.

In his closing remarks, the UN Under- Secretary General reaffirmed the United Nations’ steadfast commitment to stand with the War- affected populations and the host community. He also commended the Civil Authority’s dedicated efforts in accommodating the IDPs and providing improvised shelter centers, stressing the UN’s intention to continue fostering close cooperation and valued partnership in the forthcoming period.
