UN Assessment Mission Reaches El Fasher After Prolonged Negotiations, US Calls for Immediate Humanitarian Ceasefire

The United Nations, through its Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), announced that a UN assessment mission arrived today in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, following months of intensive humanitarian negotiations aimed at facilitating access to the besieged city.

In a post on the social media platform X, U.S. Presidential Advisor for the Middle East and Africa, Massad Boulos, welcomed the arrival of the UN mission, describing it as a clear example of how U.S. diplomacy can help save lives. He noted that the breakthrough came after months of negotiations facilitated by the United States, alongside sustained efforts by OCHA and other humanitarian partners on the ground.

Boulos expressed hope that humanitarian aid convoys would begin reaching El Fasher on a regular basis following what he described as a “devastating siege.” He called for the delivery of unconditional humanitarian assistance to all parts of Sudan, building on this progress to secure a comprehensive humanitarian ceasefire.

He also urged both warring parties in Sudan to accept and implement an immediate humanitarian truce without preconditions, and called on the international community to increase financial contributions to OCHA to enable it to respond effectively to the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country.
