Leaked Video Alleges Islamist Movement Influence Over Sudan’s Army Leadership and War Strategy

Sudan: Alsudanianews

A leaked video circulating online today appears to show Othman Yusuf Kibir, head of the Shura Council of the National Congress Party, speaking about the alleged role of Sudan’s Islamist movement within state institutions.

In the video, Kibir reportedly discusses claims about the movement’s influence over the Sudanese army and its relationship with army commander Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan. According to the statements attributed to him, the movement allegedly played a role in appointing Burhan as army chief during the 2019 protests, including the period surrounding the sit-in outside the military headquarters in Khartoum.

The remarks also refer to what he describes as the movement’s strategy from the 2019 sit-in dispersal up to the management of the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

The video has sparked widespread reactions among political observers, with some arguing that it reinforces accusations that Islamist networks continue to influence Sudan’s state institutions following the fall of former president Omar al‑Bashir.

The development comes amid Sudan’s ongoing war, which began in 2023, and growing calls from local and international actors to end the conflict and restore the country’s civilian democratic transition.
