African Rights Group Condemns Drone Strike on Ardamata Bridge, Calls for International Investigation

The African Organization for Rights and Development strongly condemns the aerial bombardment carried out today, 9 June 2026, by drones belonging to the Sudanese Armed Forces, which targeted the main Ardamata Bridge in West Darfur State. The targeting of vital infrastructure and bridges that connect cities and villages and are used daily by civilians constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits attacks on civilian objects. Ardamata Bridge is a vital lifeline for more than 500,000 citizens in El Geneina City and the localities of West Darfur. Its destruction means: 1. Cutting off food and medical supply routes for civilians 2. Obstructing the movement of displaced persons and patients to hospitals 3. Exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in a region already suffering from collapsed services Accordingly, the African Organization for Rights and Development demands: 1️⃣ The immediate cessation of targeting civilian facilities and infrastructure in Darfur 2️⃣ An independent international investigation into the incident and holding those responsible accountable 3️⃣ Allowing urgent access for engineering and relief teams to repair the bridge and restore civilian movement 4️⃣ Commitment by all parties to the conflict to international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians The repeated targeting of bridges, roads, and markets will only further complicate the crisis and will not bring security to anyone. The solution lies in dialogue, not in bombing bridges over the heads of civilians
