The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR in Sudan, has announced the completion of maintenance work on 10 main water points inside Adila refugee and IDP camp in East Darfur State, a step aimed at improving access to safe and clean drinking water for families who have been forced to flee their homes.According to UNHCR, the repair of the taps has directly reduced waiting times at water points and eased congestion that previously placed heavy pressure on women and children, the groups most affected by water shortages in the camp.“Safe water supports health, dignity and protection for families #ForcedToFlee,” UNHCR Sudan said, noting that water disruptions or contamination increase the risk of waterborne disease outbreaks, particularly among children and the elderly living in overcrowded shelter conditions.Adila camp hosts thousands of families displaced by conflict in Darfur. Most households rely on communal water points as their primary source for drinking and domestic use.The maintenance was carried out with generous support from the Governments of Canada, the European Union, Germany, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, as well as from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund, CERF.UNHCR stressed its commitment to continue working with local partners and authorities in East Darfur to ensure the sustainability of water and sanitation services, and to expand hygiene promotion programs to reduce disease in displacement sites.The intervention is part of a broader UNHCR response to support communities affected by displacement in Sudan, where millions of people remain in need of urgent humanitarian assistance including water, food, shelter, and health care.
