Hunger Threatens
Commander Arno Nqotlu Lodi, First Secretary of the Civil Authority of the New Sudan, has revealed that over three million citizens, including 768,306 displaced persons, are at risk. In a press release obtained by Alsudanianews, Arno reported that from August 14 to September 20, 2024, 416 citizens died due to hunger, and 52,479 children are experiencing severe malnutrition.
He described the humanitarian situation in the Nuba Mountains/South Kordofan region as catastrophic. Despite declaring famine in areas controlled by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – North in the Nuba Mountains and New Funj (Blue Nile) regions on August 10, 2024, the Sudan Relief and Reconstruction Agency (SRRA) has faced obstacles imposed by the Port Sudan government. These barriers have prevented humanitarian organizations from carrying out their vital work, exacerbating the suffering of citizens.
Arno emphasized that the unjustified delays in delivering relief could endanger more than three million citizens, including 768,306 displaced individuals. He noted that the humanitarian conditions in the New Funj region (Blue Nile) have worsened, further increasing the tragedy faced by residents. Technical teams are currently working to gather information and determine final numbers, which will be shared once official reports are available.
Arno appealed to United Nations agencies and humanitarian organizations for urgent intervention to save millions of lives. He also urged local, regional, and international media to apply maximum pressure to address this critical situation.
