UNICEF Libya and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) announce a new partnership with £1 million in funding dedicated to enhancing humanitarian response efforts for incoming Sudanese families and vulnerable Libyan communities in Kufra.

This collaboration aims to improve access to essential child protection services and emergency water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions. The funding will support both Sudanese families, including children in providing life-saving services urgently needed in the context of ongoing displacement and conflict, and local communities faced with increasing external pressures on already sparse services.

The project will enable UNICEF to provide psychosocial support, child protection services, and essential WASH facilities, including the repair of vital infrastructure and the distribution of hygiene kits.

UNICEF Libya Representative, Mohammad Fayyazi, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “This funding from the FCDO will make a significant difference in addressing the immediate needs of children and families displaced by conflict. By ensuring access to clean water, sanitation, and protection services, we are safeguarding the well-being of the most vulnerable and laying the groundwork for long-term stability and resilience in these communities.”

The project is expected to directly benefit over 70,000 children, including Sudanese children and families in affected communities. This funding will also strengthen UNICEF’s ongoing efforts to integrate child protection and WASH services into a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach. H.E. Martin Longden, the British Ambassador to Libya “The UK is proud to support this response, which will address the dire need of both Sudanese refugees and the Libyan communities which host them. This follows the UK’s $5m humanitarian response to the Storm Daniel floods and demonstrates our continued commitment to working with partners across all Libya to build resilience to such crises”.

UNICEF remains committed to working alongside national and international partners like the FCDO to protect the rights and well-being of children and families affected by conflict and displacement hosted in Libya.
