Khartoum / Cairo
The Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Sudan has announced the commencement of duties by Ambassador Wolfram Vetter as the new Chargé d’affaires ad interim and Head of the EU Delegation to Sudan, who will be based in Cairo during the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
In a message marking the start of his mandate, Ambassador Vetter stated:
“I am honoured to be entrusted with the important task of representing the European Union to the Republic of Sudan, based in Cairo, during this unfortunate time of war and ongoing humanitarian crisis. My team and I will strive to maintain and further develop the strong and long-standing relationship between Sudan and the European Union and to ensure that the people of Sudan are not forgotten or left behind in this time of uncertainty and hardship.”
Ambassador Vetter emphasized that the European Union has played a vital role in supporting the Sudanese people, especially since the outbreak of war in 2023. He reaffirmed the EU’s commitment—together with its Member States and partners—to assist Sudan in ending the conflict, achieving a permanent ceasefire, and advancing development and humanitarian assistance.
He underscored that his mission focuses on strengthening dialogue with all segments of Sudanese society, particularly youth and women, whom he described as the backbone of Sudan’s future.
The Ambassador further noted that the EU aims to promote humanitarian and development projects that save lives and create tangible opportunities in food security, education, health, capacity building, and climate resilience.
Highlighting Sudan’s rich cultural diversity, natural and human resources, and strategic position on the Red Sea and in the heart of Africa, Ambassador Vetter reaffirmed the EU’s strong interest and unwavering commitment to the country.
He also recognized the Sudanese diaspora in Europe as an integral part of the EU’s social and cultural fabric, describing them as productive, influential, and successful members of European societies.
The statement concluded by inviting the public to follow the EU Delegation’s official platforms on Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on its activities and initiatives.
