Khalid Omer Yousif: Leaked Video Suggests Islamist Movement Role in Appointing Burhan and Influencing Sudan’s War

Former Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Vice Chairman of the Sudanese Congress Party, Khalid Omer Yousif, said a circulating leaked video allegedly reveals details about the influence of Sudan’s Islamist movement within state institutions.

According to Yousif, the video features the head of the Shura Council of the National Congress Party, who claims that the Islamist movement itself appointed army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to lead the military and suppress protesters during the 2019 sit-in outside the military headquarters in Khartoum.

He added that the speaker in the video also states that the movement is fully aligned with Burhan and that he would remain in power for five years until their control over state institutions is secured.

Yousif argued that the video reinforces accusations that the Islamist movement has effectively captured Sudan’s state institutions and fueled the ongoing war in order to derail the country’s civilian democratic transition.

He stressed that protecting Sudan’s state institutions requires ending the war, restoring the civilian transition, and dismantling the Islamist movement’s grip on the state rather than allowing it to maintain control.
