Over 500,000 Affected, 257 Deaths: Coordination of IDPs and Refugees Urges WHO to Take Urgent Action to Prevent Cholera Outbreak in Darfur States

The Coordination of IDPs and Refugees has reported that the cholera outbreak in Darfur has affected over 500,000 people, with 257 deaths. The Coordination is urging the World Health Organization (WHO) to take urgent action to prevent the spread of the disease.
The cholera outbreak in Darfur, particularly in the Tawila camps, Jebel Marra, Nyala, Zalingei, and Shaeria locality in the Khazan Jadid area, is witnessing an alarming increase in the number of daily cases recorded in displacement centers. In the Tawila area, most cases are concentrated in the camps, while the remainder are concentrated in the Martal area south of Tawila and the Tabra area. The cumulative daily number of cases since the outbreak has reached 4,018, including 72 deaths. There are currently 98 cases in isolation centers, with 88 new cases recorded today.
The epidemic has also spread to the New Tabra area, where the cumulative daily number of cases has reached 79.
The epidemic has also spread to other areas in Jebel Marra, including Golo, where the daily cumulative number of cases has reached 893, including 51 deaths, and Guldo, where the daily cumulative number of cases has reached 61, including 7 deaths. In Nertiti, the daily cumulative number of cases since the outbreak has reached 10, including 2 deaths. In Rokero, the daily cumulative number of cases since the outbreak has reached 18, including 4 deaths. In Deribat, East Jebel Marra, the daily cumulative number of cases since the outbreak has reached 19. In the Fina area, two confirmed cholera cases have been reported.
The epidemic has also spread to Sortony camp, where the daily cumulative number of cases has reached 23, including 2 deaths.
The daily cumulative number of cases in Kalma camp has reached 435, including 45 deaths. The daily cumulative number of cases in Atash camp reached 199, including 49 deaths. The daily cumulative number in Dereig camp reached 111, including four deaths. This is in addition to the cases recorded in Al Salam camp.
In East Darfur, in the Shaeria locality of the Khazan Jadid area, the daily cumulative number of cases since the outbreak reached 39, including 17 deaths.
The cholera outbreak continued to spread to Zalingei. In Al Hamidiya camp, the daily cumulative number of cases since the outbreak reached 9, including one death. In Khamsa Daghig camp, the daily cumulative number of cases reached 3, including one death. In Talolowa area, west of Zalingei, the daily cumulative number of cases since the outbreak reached 39, including two deaths. In the agricultural area of Kombo Weir, east of Zalingei, the daily cumulative number of cases has reached two, and in Orkom, south of Zalingei, the daily cumulative number of cases since the outbreak has reached four.
The total daily cases since the outbreak in Darfur has exceeded 5,886, including 257 deaths.
The epidemic continues to spread to new areas in Darfur, particularly in Jebel Marra, Zalingei, Nyala, Khazan Jadid in Shaeria locality, and displacement camps, where the disease has spread at an unprecedented rate. Despite the scarcity of medical supplies and quarantine centers, humanitarian organizations, volunteers, emergency rooms, and local authorities are making tremendous efforts to combat the disease. Despite scarce resources and other challenges, we urge the World Health Organization and relevant institutions to take urgent action to prevent this health and humanitarian emergency.
