SPLM-RDC Condemns Destruction of Catholic Church and Assassination of Father Luka Jumo Warns of Humanitarian Catastrophe in El Fasher

The Leadership Office of SPLM-RDC is following with grave concern the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in El Fasher, where civilians continue to be targeted in a war waged by both sides. Civilians have become primary targets rather than military objectives, turning their lives into a living hell in a conflict that disregards the right to life and all human rights.
In this context, we extend our deepest condolences to our Christian brothers and sisters in El Fasher following the martyrdom of Father Luka Jumo, the city’s Catholic priest, who was killed at dawn on 13 June 2025 after the shelling of civilian. Father Luka chose to remain among his people despite the danger, becoming both a witness and a martyr.
The assassination of Father Luka is part of a wider and intensifying pattern of violence in El Fasher that once again brings to the fore the urgent issue of equal citizenship, a daily struggle that civilians endure with their own bodies.
We hold both warring parties and all those contributing to the prolongation of the conflict, fully responsible. We call for the following:
A humanitarian ceasefire agreed by both parties in the city of El Fasher – limited to the city if necessary – for a period of one month, to allow civilians to stabilise their lifestyle , access food and medicine, and improve their living conditions.
An urgent and independent investigation into the targeting of civilians, particularly religious leaders and humanitarian volunteers.
Recognition of the ongoing atrocities in El Fasher as crimes against humanity, requiring immediate international action.
