Statement on Undermining Impartial Mediation and Legitimate Peace Efforts in Sudan
The Sudan Founding Alliance has noted the recent post by the UN Personal Envoy to Sudan on Twitter, in which he states that UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomes the so-called roadmap announced by the self-proclaimed “Government of Sudan.” If confirmed, this position constitutes a clear and troubling indication of the UN Special Envoy’s growing bias in the Sudanese conflict.
By endorsing a unilateral initiative from one party to the conflict (the Sudanese Armed Forces), rather than fostering an inclusive and impartial process, the UN risks compromising its credibility as a neutral mediator. This development further underscores concerns about the UN Special Envoy’s partiality, raising serious doubts about his ability to fulfill his mandate as an impartial facilitator.
This stance is particularly alarming given that the so-called “government” in Port Sudan is neither legitimate nor representative of the diverse political and social forces within the country. It is a faction that has escalated violence, perpetuated atrocities, and consistently rejected meaningful negotiations. For the UN to implicitly legitimize this entity’s unilateral proposal while calling on all Sudanese to “enrich” it is to abandon the basic tenets of conflict resolution—fairness, inclusivity, and respect for the realities on the ground.
Furthermore, this development underscores the failure of the UN’s personal envoy to Sudan, who has increasingly exhibited partiality in his dealings, aligning with one side of the conflict rather than upholding an impartial mediation role. His actions, compounded by the statement attributed to the Secretary-General, render him ineligible to continue in his role as a neutral facilitator. The Sudanese peoples, particularly those who have been historically marginalized and oppressed, cannot place trust in a process that is being openly skewed in favor of one faction.
If the UN—and, for that matter, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and Kuwait that have recently expressed support for Port Sudan—is truly committed to facilitating peace in Sudan, it must correct this dangerous bias by advocating for an inclusive and representative dialogue. Instead of legitimizing an exclusionary and violent regime, the focus must be on fostering a process that genuinely reflects the diverse political and social realities of Sudan. The Sudanese peoples deserve a process rooted in justice, equity, and genuine reconciliation—not an externally sanctioned attempt to reassert the dominance of a failed and oppressive state model.
The Sudan Founding Coalition rejects any attempt to restrict the will of the Sudanese peoples or impose solutions that do not stem from the true realities of the crisis. A sustainable resolution to the Sudanese crisis must be comprehensive, acknowledge all influential forces, and ensure justice for all components of Sudan, free from any biased external interventions. The Coalition calls on all international parties, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and Kuwait to adhere to the principles of international law and recognize the rights of all Sudanese peoples to determine their own future, without bias or interference that threatens justice, freedom, and stability in Sudan.
