SLM Civil Authority Issues Urgent Appeal for Agricultural Season in Liberated Territories

Liberated Territories Mujeeb al Rahman Mohammed al Zubair, Head of the Civil Authority in the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A-AW) liberated territories chaired by Abdul Wahid Mohamed Ahmed Al Nour, has issued an urgent appeal to citizens and international organizations, calling for the immediate launch of a broad-based agricultural revolution to address the catastrophic humanitarian situation and secure food security.In his statement, al Zubair said that the use of humanitarian aid as a weapon of war, alongside the obstruction of relief access and deteriorating livelihood conditions, poses a direct threat to food security and livelihoods in areas under the Movement’s control.The Head of the Civil Authority urged sedentary farmers, local communities, and Internally Displaced Persons to immediately begin large-scale cultivation with the onset of the rainy season, aiming to transform current challenges into sustainable opportunities, promote self-reliance, and restore livelihoods.

In light of the current catastrophic humanitarian situation, the deteriorating economic and livelihood challenges, and the obstruction of relief and humanitarian assistance, and the use of humanitarian aid assistance as a weapon of war, which together constitute a grave threat to food security and livelihoods, the Civil Authority hereby issues this urgent appeal to all our resilient people, community groups, sedentary farmers residing in areas under the sovereignty of the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A-AW)  chaired by Abdul Wahid Mohamed Ahmed Al Nour.

With the onset of the rainy season, we earnestly call upon you to immediately engage in large- scale agricultural cultivation and to launch a broad-based agricultural revolution  aimed at transforming  current challenges into sustainable opportunities, strengthen food security, restoring livelihoods, promoting self-reliance, enhancing community resilience, stimulating local economic recovery, and ultimately securing dignified and sustainable livelihoods for both host communities and the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). 

To foster these efforts, the Civil Authority also appeals to the United Nations and its specialized agencies, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) as well as regional and international donor partners to fulfill their respective mandates by providing urgently needed essential agricultural inputs. These include agricultural machinery and equipment, improved seeds and planting materials, the development of irrigation systems, pesticides for the control of crop pests and disease outbreaks, capacity –building and agricultural extension services, the establishment of storage and cold-chain facilities to protect harvested crops and reduce post- harvest losses, and support for agricultural partnerships and farmers’ associations.

Together, let us cultivate the land to secure dignity, economic resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.
