The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has praised France for its continued support to Sudan and its leadership in drawing international attention to the country’s deepening humanitarian crisis, marking Bastille Day, France’s National Day celebrated annually on 14 July.
In a statement released on the occasion, UNHCR congratulated France on its national celebration, which commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789—an event widely regarded as the beginning of the French Revolution and a symbol of liberty, equality, and justice.
The agency expressed its appreciation for France’s longstanding partnership with UNHCR and its commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts in Sudan during one of the country’s most challenging periods.
“Happy Bastille Day to France . Thank you for your partnership with UNHCR and for your leadership to support and draw attention to Sudan – the world’s largest displacement crisis,” the agency said in its statement.
UNHCR emphasized that the humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate as the conflict drives millions of people from their homes, forcing many to seek refuge within Sudan or across neighboring countries. The agency noted that Sudan has become the largest displacement crisis in the world, with humanitarian needs continuing to grow at an alarming rate.
The refugee agency stressed that sustained international solidarity remains essential to address the escalating humanitarian emergency, urging the international community to maintain political attention and financial support for relief operations.
UNHCR highlighted that partnerships with donor countries, including France, are vital to providing life-saving assistance, protection, shelter, healthcare, education, and other essential services for displaced people and refugees, while also supporting host communities facing increasing pressure.
The statement comes as UN agencies continue to warn that the ongoing conflict in Sudan is creating unprecedented humanitarian challenges, calling for greater international engagement to ensure that millions of displaced civilians receive the assistance they urgently need and that the crisis remains high on the global agenda.
