New ICRC Head of Delegation Lorenzo Caraffi Arrives in Sudan, Witnesses Devastating Impact of Conflict in Khartoum

The International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, has announced the arrival of Mr. Lorenzo Caraffi in Sudan to assume his duties as the new Head of Delegation in the country.During his first visit to Khartoum, Caraffi met with authorities to discuss the deteriorating humanitarian situation and ways to strengthen the response to growing needs. He also witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict on infrastructure, essential services, and civilians.“The needs are immense across Sudan, from Khartoum to Darfur and Kordofan and other areas affected by the conflict,” the ICRC said in a statement, noting that millions of people face acute shortages of food, water, healthcare and shelter.Caraffi reaffirmed the ICRC’s commitment to continue working “side by side with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society @SRCS_SD” to deliver life-saving support to the most vulnerable across the country. This includes providing clean water, health care, support to hospitals, relief distributions, and visits to detainees.The new Head of Delegation stressed the importance of upholding international humanitarian law and protecting civilians and humanitarian workers. “The price of inaction increases day by day. The more international humanitarian law is ignored, the harder it becomes to restore basic services, address the consequences of the conflict, and rebuild trust,” he said.The ICRC has been operating in Sudan for decades and remains one of the key organizations providing neutral and independent assistance in conflict-affected areas. Caraffi’s appointment comes as Sudan faces one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, with millions displaced inside the country and across borders.The ICRC concluded by stating that its priorities in the coming period will be to expand humanitarian access and scale up operations in the hardest-hit areas, while upholding the principles of neutrality and independence.
