Israeli political analyst and researcher Dr. Edy Cohen has described the reported Saudi support for the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) as a “dangerous miscalculation” that could undermine prospects for peace in Sudan and the wider region. He also claimed that Sudanese Armed Forces commander General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan is currently receiving military support from Iran.
In exclusive remarks to Sudania News, Cohen commented on reports regarding Saudi assistance to the Sudanese military, saying:
“We see a continuation of inconsistent policies. Saudi Arabia declares that it is fighting the Muslim Brotherhood, yet at the same time it is supporting an army whose leadership is described as being affiliated with the Brotherhood in Sudan.”
“This inconsistency resembles its approach toward Israel—public hostility while allowing Al Arabiya to host the President of Israel. It is a policy that lacks clarity.” ) He added
Addressing the potential impact of such support on the conflict, Cohen argued that continued military assistance would prolong the war and further complicate Sudan’s crisis.
“This support is dangerous. It will extend the duration of the conflict and make the Sudanese crisis even more difficult to resolve. If there is genuine intent to achieve peace in Sudan and across the region, such support should stop immediately,” he said.
Cohen also criticized what he described as the “ambiguous and inconsistent” Arab position on Sudan, warning that the absence of a unified regional approach could have consequences beyond Sudan’s borders.
“The lack of a clear and united Arab position on Sudan will have negative repercussions not only for Sudan, but also for regional and international security and stability,” he stated.
When asked about reports suggesting that General al-Burhan might seek Israeli mediation for military support—particularly in light of his previous meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Uganda—Cohen said he could not confirm those reports.
“I cannot verify that information,” he said. “What is certain, however, is that General al-Burhan is currently receiving military support from Iran, including drones and weapons. That is the reality on the ground as I understand it.”
Cohen’s comments come as fighting continues across several fronts in Sudan and regional and international actors intensify calls for a ceasefire and a return to a negotiated political process.
