UNISFA Enhances Security and Expands Community Trust as Robust Weapons-Free Abyei Operation Concludes
The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has successfully concluded a five-day Weapons Free Abyei operations campaign across its three sectors. The operation contributed to enhancing the protection of civilians, boosted security and strengthened community engagement across the Area of Operation in support of the Mission’s mandate to maintain a safe and demilitarized Abyei.
Conducted from 24 to 28 July, the coordinated mission-wide initiative brought together civilian, military and police components in one of the Mission’s most inclusive security operations. It sought to deter the public display of weapons and the presence of unauthorized armed actors, promote the freedom of movement and facilitate humanitarian access.
Throughout the operation, peacekeepers maintained a continuous day-and-night security presence through 32 Safe Corridor Deployments, 23 checkpoints, 18 command posts, as well as temporary operating bases and mobile patrols. These deployments enhanced security in key population areas, markets and along main supply routes. A total of 2,509 peacekeepers participated while 270 patrols were conducted to reassure communities and deter the movement of unauthorized armed elements when required.
Speaking during the operation, OIC-Acting Head of Mission and Force Commander, Brigadier – General Adebowale Ajagbe, reaffirmed UNISFA’s commitment to enforcing adherence to the demilitarization of Abyei through close collaboration with communities and local authorities.
“The success of this campaign depends not only on the security posture but also on the trust and cooperation of the people of Abyei. Together, we are creating a safer environment where communities can peacefully coexist and move freely without fear.”
Community engagement was central to the campaign and sensitization activities were conducted in key locations, including the Amiet Common Market, to promote understanding and encourage community ownership of the process.
The operation recorded achievements, including contributing to a noticeable reduction in the visible presence of weapons and unauthorized armed actors in public areas, including main supply routes and local markets. Beyond reinforcing security, peacekeepers conducted Civil-Military Cooperation activities that included the provision of clean drinking water, and provision of medical and veterinary outreach services. Building on the momentum and the need to consolidate gains made, UNISFA will continue to strengthen these activities, including the confiscation of weapons, day and night patrols, door-to-door sensitization campaigns and expanded Civil-Military Cooperation initiatives.
