August 1, 2026The Displaced and Refugees Commission has warned that Darfur and Kordofan are facing an imminent famine due to severe drought, collapsing agricultural production, and unprecedented spikes in food prices.Spokesperson Adam Rijal stated that poor rainfall this season has caused a major decline in staple crops, particularly millet and sorghum. In the markets of Qolo and Nerteti in Jebel Marra, one mud of millet now costs 12,000 and 10,000 Sudanese pounds respectively. The price of one kilo of meat in Qolo ranges between 12,000 – 20,000 pounds.Rijal added that the situation in Kordofan is equally dire. Sorghum prices have risen by more than 200%, while markets in El Obeid and Delling are suffering acute grain shortages, forcing families to reduce daily meals. Drought has also led to the death of large numbers of livestock, a primary source of income and food.The statement blamed “crisis traders” for exploiting the situation amid a lack of government oversight. It called for urgent intervention from humanitarian organizations and the international community to provide food and medicine, regulate markets, and support farmers and herders. Children and women remain the most vulnerable, and any delay will turn this crisis into a large-scale humanitarian catastrophe.
