DVSO Hosts Joint Workshop in Kampala on Human Rights in Sudan and Media Coordination

Joint Workshop for Human Rights Organizations and Media Institutions on Human Rights in Sudan
Kampala – August 13, 2026
Today, Thursday, the Darfur Victims Support Organization (DVSO) organized a coordination workshop at the Human Rights House in the Nsambya area of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, with the participation of several media institutions and entities. The event took place as part of the project “Strengthening the Capacities of Young Human Rights Defenders in Monitoring, Documenting, and Reporting Human Rights Violations.”
The workshop aimed to plan and coordinate the implementation of joint media campaigns that contribute to raising public awareness about the human rights situation in Sudan, highlighting violations and civilian protection concerns, and amplifying the voices of human rights defenders, survivors, affected communities, and civil society organizations.
During the workshop, Professor Hafez Ismail Mohamed presented a paper on the concept of advocacy, its importance, and its role in positively influencing human rights issues. He reviewed how advocacy and media campaigns contribute to raising public awareness, conveying the voices of affected individuals, and influencing policies and decisions related to the protection of human rights.
The paper also addressed the importance of coordination between civil society organizations and the media, alongside utilizing various media tools in a professional and ethical manner to enhance documentation and accountability efforts and support human rights defenders and affected communities.
The workshop featured discussions on developing professional, ethical, and evidence-based media content through news, investigative reports, interviews, human stories, articles, social media content, and multimedia productions.
The organization emphasized the importance of strengthening the partnership between civil society institutions and media outlets to support independent journalism, combat misinformation and hate speech, and increase national and international focus on protecting civilians and human rights defenders.
This workshop comes as part of DVSO’s ongoing efforts to expand media cooperation, enhance the flow of reliable information regarding the humanitarian and rights situation in Sudan to local and international audiences, and advance the causes of justice, accountability, peace, and human rights protection.
