STATEMENT ON THE CONVENING OF THE THIRD MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL OF THE SUDAN LIBERATION MOVEMENT
The Sudan Liberation Movement(SLM) convened a workshop in Nairobi, the capital of the Republic Kenya, from 11 to 14 August 2026. The workshop was organized by the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) which is headquartered in South Africa.
The workshop was attended by comrades – both men and women from the Supreme Leadership Council, the Revolutionary Liberation Council, the Executive Council, and leadership figures from other institutional bodies of the movement.
The proceedings examined the resistance experience of the African National Congress (ANC) against the apartheid regime, drawing parallels between the South African practice and the struggle of the Sudanese peoples for freedom, dignity and emancipation ultimately aiming to establish a state grounded in equal citizenship. The gathering also reviewed the genocide, ethnic cleansing, war crimes, and crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Islamic Front regime in South Sudan, the Nuba Mountains, Blue Nile state, Eastern Sudan, and Darfur.
The second segment of the workshop was dedicated to an organizational session, encompassing all participating institutions. The deliberations focused on internal organizational matters and the prevailing political situation in Sudan, amid the ongoing war and the persistent rejection of all serious initiatives aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the national crisis.
The meeting reiterated the movement’s unwavering commitment to the document of Sudanese Declaration of Principles Towards Building a New State, and stressed the necessity of establishing a broad civilian – led front to halt and end the war. This front would exclude only the National Congress Party, the Islamic Movement, and their affiliated facades, as well as those who willingly decline to join the process.
The participants underscored the imperative of an inclusive solution leading to fundamental change, the establishment of a state of equal citizenship, and the rule of law. They called for accountability for all crimes and violations, including those committed during the ongoing war that began on 15April 2023, the surrender of all individuals subject to arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), and the guarantee of no impunity. They firmly rejected all forms of partial solutions and bilateral agreements, and emphasized the importance of addressing the historical root causes of the crisis, in accordance with the principles enshrined in the Sudanese Declaration of Principles.
The meeting called upon the United Nations and the international community to discharge their humanitarian and moral responsibilities in protecting Sudanese civilians in conflict-affected areas. It urged them to exert pressure on the warring parties to open humanitarian corridors and all crossing points, so as to ensure the unhindered flow of relief and humanitarian assistance to all those in need throughout Sudan, without restrictions or preconditions, and to criminalize the use of humanitarian aid as a weapon of war.
The gathering expressed grave concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, compounded by the obstruction of relief access and the scarcity of rainfall across all regions, signaling a looming famine and severe food shortages. It called upon the United Nations and international organizations to sound the alarm before the impending catastrophe unfolds.
The Proceedings stressed the Movement’s anti- war stance and its neutrality in the conflict, asserting that there can be no military solution to the ongoing war, as evidenced by the history of all wars in Sudan since 1955.
The participants affirmed that the Quad international initiative and its provisions represent the appropriate framework for addressing the national crisis. They further warned against maneuvers by certain quarters aimed at undermining the initiative, as well as their desperate attempts to create an opening for the participation of the National Congress Party, the Islamic Movement, and their affiliated facades in Sudan’s political process- thereby rewarding them for the war they ignited on 15 April 2023.
In addition, the Movement’s Leadership held separate meetings with both the Revolutionary Liberation Council and the Executive Council. These sessions addressed organizational matters within their respective purviews, assessed performance over the preceding period, and sought to consolidate achievements while redressing deficiencies.
Finally, the Supreme Leadership Council, the Revolutionary Liberation Council, and the Executive Council participated in a commemoration ceremony organized by Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) East African Office –Kenya Federation, marking the Movement’s Martyrs’ Day. As enshrined in the constitution and observed annually on 14 August, this year’s ceremony was held under the theme: “Our Martyrs are the Pulse of Memory and the Covenant of the Journey” Enthusiastic statements were delivered at the ceremony by: –
