The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sudan, Ms. Denise Brown visited the Sudan National Museum to witness first-hand the impact of the conflict on one of Sudan’s most important cultural institutions and to learn about UNESCO’s ongoing efforts to safeguard and rehabilitate the Museum and safeguard its collections, under the framework of the project “Protecting and Promoting Sudanese Cultural Heritage: Rehabilitating the Sudan National Museum,” generously funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in close cooperation with the national and international partners. The visit was followed by a visit from H.E. Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim Tajer Al Sada, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Sudan, who expressed his appreciation for the efforts undertaken to protect the Museum and its collections. The Ambassador conveyed his deep sympathy regarding the damage sustained by the Museum, praised Sudan’s rich and outstanding cultural heritage, and reaffirmed Qatar’s interest in supporting efforts aimed at advancing the rehabilitation and recovery of the Sudan National Museum.

Organized by the UNESCO Sudan Office, in coordination with the Sudanese National Commission for UNESCO and the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums (NCAM), these visits highlighted the importance of protecting cultural heritage as a foundation for recovery, social cohesion, resilience, and sustainable development, and the urgent funding need for a comprehensive rehabilitation and reactivation of the National Museum.
UNESCO extends its sincere appreciation to the Resident Coordinator and all partners for their support and remains committed to the safeguarding of Sudanese cultural heritage and rehabilitation of the Sudan National Museum.
