Darfur Bar Association strongly condemns the abduction of Sheikh Al-Ameen and his family to an unknown location by elements affiliated with the army.
The Association expresses deep concern about the escalating combat operations between the warring parties in Khartoum State, especially in Omdurman city and villages in the Gezira State, resulting in increased casualties and injuries.
Regrettably, the Association has learned about the rising rate of extrajudicial killings in the old neighborhoods of Omdurman, such as Beit Al-Mal, and areas adjacent to the Omdurman Radio Station. The Abbasya, Muradah, and Omdurman Suk neighborhoods witnessed operations by the army's special task force. Reliable sources indicate that the special task force killed eight civilians, some inside their homes and streets. One victim chose to stay at his family's home to care for elderly relatives who refused to evacuate Omdurman. Additionally, three women selling food and tea were among the casualties, along with a sandwich seller and a daily laborer.
Following reports of intense clashes and continuous gunfire near the Radio Station and Sheikh Al-Ameen's Religious Complex, resulting in casualties and injuries, the Association learned on Monday, February 26, 2024, that army elements stormed Sheikh Al-Ameen's Religious Complex, abducting him and his family to an unknown location. Today, Tuesday, February 27, 2024, the Association learned that Sheikh Al-Ameen's family has been released without knowledge of his whereabouts.
The Association demands the immediate release of Sheikh Al-Ameen by the army, expressing concern for his personal safety as the leader of the sect who opened his mosque to shelter and treat the wounded. These individuals were forced to leave their homes and found a safe haven in his Religious Complex.
The Association declares full solidarity with Sheikh Al-Ameen and will report these blatant human rights violations to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva and the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York. The Religious Complex served as a refuge for those escaping the horrors of war, providing essential services like food and medical assistance to those in need. The Association calls for the respect of the sanctity of religious spaces and the safety of those seeking shelter.
